SOCIAL, HUMANITARIAN, & CULTURAL COMMITTEE

Confronting Human Trafficking in the Digital Age

Director: Adrianna K. Canino Rivera

BACKGROUND GUIDE COMING SOON!

According to the UN, Human Trafficking is the “recruitment, transportation, harboring, or receipt of people through force, fraud, or deception” for the purposes of exploitation and profit. No country is immune to this issue; all UN Member States may serve as countries of origin, transit, or destination for victims of trafficking. Women and girls continue to represent a significant portion of identified victims, while conflict and instability further aggravate existing vulnerabilities. Armed groups may exploit civilian populations, and traffickers often target forcibly displaced people who lack stable protection.

This committee will focus on strengthening international cooperation against human trafficking and the exploitation networks that allow it to persist. As the world continues to develop, trafficking methods have become more sophisticated and difficult to track. Traffickers no longer need to rely solely on physical locations or traditional methods. Social media, dating apps, and other platforms have created new opportunities to identify, deceive, and exploit potential victims.

Delegates will be challenged to consider how the international community can improve prevention, strengthen cooperation across borders, protect vulnerable populations, and innovate responses to the methods used by traffickers.
